If you're here looking for uncritical praise of Burning Man, wow, are you in the wrong place. This site (and thus, this directory) is in its early stages, so this material is still laid out in a vaguely linear fashion, starting with this page, but as time allows I'm going to try to go beyond the pure narrative to include a discussion of where this subculture went wrong. Glib answers, mostly centering on drug use, are easily had, but there is a little bit more of that which is shamefully, typically American to be found in this festival for such a comfortably easy separation to be made between them and the rest of us. Burning Man, as an American cultural event, may be thoroughly unusual in degree, but it is not so comfortably unusual in kind.
